Overall Reflection of Course by Janet Simon
Final Reflection
Throughout the duration of this course, I must say that I have learnt quite a lot as last semester, I was thoroughly educated about the importance of Reading. However, in comparison to last semester, my focus was moved to writing and its importance in the classroom.
I must confess that in my first year of teaching, I failed to provide requisite opportunities to promote meaningful writing among my students. I focused more on providing my students with prepared topics rather than affording them the opportunity to chose topics of their own and keep journals or prepare portfolios for their writing. I am now of the opinion that every lesson taught for language should include an aspect of writing. Students should be able to fluently express themselves as at their age in the primary level, they are bombarded with many experiences and writing would surely assist them in organizing their thoughts.
Through writing, students are also able to express themselves if in the event they are facing and issue. Teachers and parents would better be able to assist students especially if they have issues verbally expressing themselves. Promoting writing in the Primary Grades certainly cultivates a habit of writing given that as students elevate to the secondary level and beyond, it lessons the work on Secondary Teachers to teach conventions for writing from the beginning to assist students.
