Developing a Philosophy of Writing for Teaching
I believe that writing plays an integral part in a child development as it is one of the first traits that children portray. they sorts by running pencils, pens or crayons across anything which they come into contact with even if it may at times be unconventional materials such as food or household product. children should be given the opportunity to write as much as possible, not only about given topics but more about what they are interested in or what happens within the environment around them. This impresses the students to express themselves and may in some cases act as a gateway for parents or teachers to have an idea of a child's interest or what they may be thinking about especially in the event that they are going through an issue which plays on their psyche.
Through instruction, I expect students to become more fluent writers who are conscious of what they are writing and make necessary corrections where necessary. I also expect that my writers become critical thinkers who take the time to analyze their surrounding and make informed decisions independently through research or based on their own feelings and beliefs. I further expect of my writers to exercise originality as opposed to plagiarizing an individuals work.
To enhance writing instruction, as i teacher, i fully intend to teach students the styles of writing and characteristics of each inclusive of encouraging them to write and analyze pieces of these styles/genres to promote familiarity with the styles. It is also my wish to teach students how to compile a piece of writing through the implementation of the writing process. Students will be given more opportunities to write as firstly, classes will include writing, students will keep a journal to document their feelings and thoughts about life in and out of school and thirdly more opportunities will be given where student choose their wiring topics which fuels creativity among students. Emphasis will be placed on teaching students mechanics in writing so as to aid them in more fluent writing though mechanics would not be the main study while they are writing. For writing to occur however, an environment conducive for writing should be present. Hence, as a result, students will be provided with paper based material, Stationary and objects which students may choose to write. Given that technology has been finding its place in the classroom, my hope is to utilize technology in the classroom as much s possible so that students may firstly be exposed to other research for writing while secondly allowing students to record throe work using a word processor such as Microsoft Word.
Within our classrooms, writing is not wholeheartedly seen as an integral aspect of writing to students development. As a result, upon returning to the classroom, intend to expose students as much goes possible to each genres of writing and provide more opportunities for students to write meaningfully as opposed to giving them pre-prepared topics which may in some cases limit their creativity.

Janet, the approach of allowing students to choose their writing topics is quite interesting and I can agree that it would indeed encourage their creativity, which is at risk of as you said "limit their creativity".
ReplyDeleteThe use of materials such as stationery objects and technology has already began to and will continue to help teachers in effectively teaching and motivating students to love writing.
